A Case Study : Santa Clara Revival Laundry/Pantry, Alameda, SF Bay Area, CA

Every home has its “behind-the-scenes” spaces—the ones that may not always be on display but are essential to the flow of daily life. In this 100-year-old Alameda home, there wasn’t a dedicated laundry or pantry area, which made everyday routines feel disorganized and inefficient. Laundry was tucked away without proper storage, and the kitchen lacked the extra space needed to keep essentials accessible yet out of sight.

Project Overview

  • Location: Alameda, CA

  • Home age: 100 years old

  • Challenge: No dedicated laundry or pantry; disorganized flow; inefficient use of space

  • Goal: Create a compact yet highly functional laundry + pantry with smart storage and durable finishes

Before the Remodel

The home simply didn’t have space set aside for laundry or pantry needs. Laundry was tucked away without proper cabinetry, counter space, or storage, which made the most basic tasks a hassle. The clients wanted their kitchen to maintain a clean, uncluttered aesthetic, which meant pantry storage needed to be relocated out of sight. The adjoining space—a covered porch that had been loosely adapted into a laundry area with miscellaneous storage—wasn’t working for their needs. The goal was to reimagine this room as a purposeful, well-designed space that could seamlessly combine laundry functions with ample pantry storage

The Design Process

  • Layout

We reimagined the footprint by repurposing a porch extension. What was once an underutilized zone became the perfect spot to house a combined laundry and pantry. This strategic move allowed us to create a highly efficient layout while keeping it connected to the core living spaces

  •  Concepts And Inspiration

Every project begins with a concept phase, where we collaborate closely with clients to understand their priorities. Through in-depth design questionnaires and shared Pinterest boards, we explored how to maximize a compact footprint without compromising on function. Since the clients’ existing kitchen already featured dark cabinetry, we decided to carry that language into the laundry pantry. Choosing darker cabinets created a sense of continuity, while also adding depth and contrast to the compact room. The vision was a space that was hardworking yet calm—one that would make chores easier and the home more organized overall.

  • Materials and Finishes

Durability was key here. We selected cabinetry that could stand up to daily use, paired with easy-to-clean counters that double as folding and sorting zones. Neutral tones kept the space feeling open and airy, while warm accents ensured it still felt connected to the rest of the home.

  •  Detailed Design

Once the concepts and budget were finalized, we moved into the detailed design phase. This stage is where ideas take shape in a tangible way—with precise elevations, a finalized budget that included pricing and quotes for each specified item, and detailed specification sheets for materials and fixtures. This process ensured clarity for both the clients and the contractors, leaving no detail overlooked and setting the project up for a smooth execution.

The Transformation & Final Reveal

The result is a multifunctional laundry + pantry that feels both efficient and inviting. Tall cabinets provide generous storage for pantry items, small appliances, and cleaning supplies, while base cabinets and counters create a practical laundry zone. Appliances are seamlessly integrated, and everything has its place—transforming daily chores into smoother, more enjoyable tasks.

What was once a forgotten porch extension is now one of the most useful spaces in the house, built to support the family for another 100 years with timeless design and thoughtful details.

Transforming this once-overlooked porch space into a hardworking laundry and pantry has been one of the most rewarding parts of the Santa Clara Revival. What was once cramped and chaotic is now a streamlined hub of organization—designed to make everyday life simpler, calmer, and more efficient. By blending smart storage with durable finishes and a cohesive palette, we created a space that not only supports the family’s needs today but will also serve them beautifully for years to come.
